Project Overview

Following the successful installation of two test fire barriers earlier in the programme, Invicta ANARA was appointed to deliver a wider fire protection package across the Dubai Metro Green Line. The project involved the design and installation of 40 three-hour fire barriers across 19 underground and overground stations, with each barrier designed to close openings of approximately 12–15 m² within mechanical room areas while remaining fully demountable for maintenance and machinery removal.

Project Challenge

The barriers needed to provide three-hour fire resistance while remaining completely demountable. Mechanical rooms require regular access for maintenance and equipment removal, so a fixed wall could make these activities more difficult and potentially require disruptive demolition. The solution therefore needed to maintain the required fire separation while allowing the barriers to be removed when access was required. They also had to accommodate service penetrations and varying site conditions across 19 separate stations.

Technical Constraints

The openings varied from station to station, with uneven surfaces and irregular wall shapes around the barrier locations. Each installation therefore had to be adapted to the conditions on site. Ductwork and cable trays also passed through the barrier lines, with these penetrations incorporated into the barrier design and sealed with firebatt to maintain the required fire protection.

Where barriers had externally exposed faces, they also needed to withstand high wind loads, adding another requirement to the design. Installation took place across multiple underground locations, where restricted working conditions and a strict programme added further complexity to the work.

Installed Solution

Invicta designed and installed 40 three-hour fire-rated, fully demountable Durasteel® barriers across the 19 Green Line stations. Each barrier was adapted to the dimensions and irregularities of its individual opening while incorporating the required duct and cable tray penetrations. The demountable configuration allowed the barriers to be removed when access to mechanical equipment was required, avoiding the need for permanent fixed construction at these locations.

Installation teams worked across challenging underground conditions and varied station environments, adapting the installation approach to suit each location. The project was completed in time for the affected stations to open as scheduled.

Project Outcome

The completed installation provided:

  • 40 three-hour fire-rated barriers
  • 19 underground and overground Green Line stations
  • Barrier openings of approximately 12–15 m² each
  • Fully demountable construction for maintenance and machinery access
  • Fire-rated treatment of duct and cable tray penetrations
  • Design provisions for high wind loads at externally exposed locations
  • Installation across challenging underground environments
  • Completion in time for the affected stations to open as scheduled

The project brought together fire protection, demountability and practical installation requirements across a large number of operationally important metro locations.
